Rock Creek

WWA hosted a Rock Creek Congressional Tour and presentation, September 2007 - at the HF Bar Ranch in Saddlestring, WY. The goal of the event was to introduce Rock Creek area, recommended for Wilderness by the Bighorn National Forest to the state congressional staff and Johnson County commissioners. Long-time supporters of Rock Creek protections also attended: Mark Gordon, Rancher; Representative Jack Landon (R-Sheridan); and Roger Wilson (Retired Game and Fish biologist). The Bighorn National Forest also sent staff to offer a presentation on the reasons why Rock Creek was recommended for wilderness management. Matt Keller from The Wilderness Society joined the group and WWA staff included Liz Howell, Amy Vanderwall and Greg Nickerson. Our Governing Council stepped up as well for Rock Creek—Margi Schroth, Claire Leon and Mike Weber attested to Rock Creek and the need for Wilderness in this area.

WWA is grateful to the HF Bar for the great lunch and the horse and hiking tours for a view point of Rock Creek. The entire Bighorn range was socked in with clouds, EXCEPT for Rock Creek Roadless Area which was illuminated by the sun! We had big powers on our side that day. Everyone returned to the HF Bar for hot chocolate and cookies, exclaiming the beauty of the area and their willingness to assist in seeking the next step for wilderness protection--following up to arrange a DC staff and delegation tour of Rock Creek next year.
